As buds begin to spring from branches, and the birds call their songs, some creative new works from Votive Dance emerge just in time for the warm weather. “Natural Forces” will showcase four new works commissioned by Votive Dance Company including the premiere of “The Youth Project”
Lead by Stephanie Mitro, the Youth Project is an inclusion initiative that brings young dancers from many dance schools around Nova Scotia together to perform Enigma a piece that explores movement as individual moments captured in time. With support from the Department of Communities, Cultures and Heritage, co-artistic directors Kathleen Doherty and Stephanie Mitro were able to unite 14 dancers to showcase this special piece in a professional setting; offering a unique opportunity for young dancers to experience the world of professional dance.
Michele Slattery, a long time member of Votive Dance will be showcasing her beautiful solo Who?>. As the creator and performer of the work she captivates with her exploration of cognitive dissonance. Working with the tension of the psyche while revealing the intimate side of performance, Michele’s talent for allowing the movement to cascade though space draws her audience in delightfully.
Inspired by the landscape and endless flow of water in Iceland, Lydia Zimmer presents her new work Embankment featuring Rhonda Baker, Vivika Ballard and Kathleen Doherty. The piece has an ethereal feeling. The three dancers are incredibly invested, inviting you in to an imagined landscape; water flowing past as they perform geometric movement at the riverbank.
Kathleen Doherty’s Refracted will feature Stephanie Mitro as a solo performer merging contemporary dance with Doherty’s unique jazz stylistics.
Votive Dance Company has been gaining momentum since inception five years ago with seven full length productions and appearances in other Canadian cities including Calgary and Montreal.
Doherty co-artistic director of the company invites you to see Natural Forces May 18-20:
“We have brought together an incredible group of professional Halifax dance artists for this presentation, as well as an exciting group of 14 young dancers from throughout the province through Votive Dance’s Youth Project. This is a refreshing show which can be appreciated by both new and experienced dance artists alike. We look forward to sharing these new dance works with you!”
