Mocean Dance is a classic in the Halifax Dance world. A home base for dancers whom mostly have travelled away and returned back to their roots, this Company features artists with different styles and backgrounds. Working together to keep dance thriving in Halifax they continuously colour and reform the city’s movement community by inviting guest choreographers, introducing new training techniques and pushing the boundaries for dancers and dance viewers alike. We are so lucky to have Mocean produce a show here in Halifax on an annual basis.
Recently the company worked with Serge Bennathan in an intense creation process to create the feature choreography “Sable Island” Since his arrival here in Canada, Bennathan has received multiple awards including Outstanding New Award for his work The Satie Project. The piece of forty minutes will be presented as a group by Mocean exhibiting the strength and commitment of these dancers. Inspired by Sable Island, Serge Bennathan has pushed the girls to the brink in much the same way I imagine the environment of this treasured island does to the wild horses that call it home.
Another exciting portion of the Mocean’s annual production will be guest artist Cory Bowles’ solo work. Atlantic Canada’s hardworking dancer/ tv star / musician / choreographer / mentor, his work will certainly involve some intricate dance syntax. This powerhouse will be showing a new version of “Live from the Flashpan” a satirical comment on dancers having to keep up with ever changing pop culture influences. Rhonda Baker, a Halifax favourite for her strength, stamina and ability to take on any challenge will be dancing the disgruntled artist who clearly could care less what her challengers think.

There are many ways to get involved in this event, from their fundraiser at Bistro le Coq, to a contest to win two tickets, ferry fare and a yummy meal from the Wooden Monkey. Visit their Facebook page for more details.
So many reasons to attend if not only to plug into a piece of Halifax’s culture and witness a mainstay in dance here in our city.
Here you can find a poetically written journal keeping you updated on their current projects.
