Re-Jigged Festival, a truly Nova Scotian Experience

Interested in seeing how the Nova Scotian culture stays true through dance? Check out the Re-Jigged festival in Dartmouth coming up in October. Complete with music and dance performances, and a Children’s Gaelic Program to keep the kids entertained as well. Last year there were visiting and local performers demonstrating the traditional Sean-nos step and Celtic dancing to inspire audience members before they hopped onto the dance floor. To callings by Elizabeth MacDonald, a well known ceili caller and known for bringing the Sean-nos style to Nova Scotia, visitors could dance the traditional Nova Scotian Irish dance and be whisked away to times afor. Throughout the weekend workshops were offered by these same performers so you could learn more about the timeless tradition many are so proud of.
Re-Jigged was created with a vision of continuing and reinventing the age old enjoyment of Celtic art including painting, music and of course, dance. Set in the beautiful Christ Church Parish in Dartmouth, these skilled teachers will lead you through learning or continuing to learn about traditions valued by many in this province.
According to the website Easy Irish Dance, “sean-nos” dancing (pronounced shaw-noes) is an older style of Irish dancing traditionally performed in a small group to live irish music. It incorporates rhythm and steps put together in the an unrecognizable pattern. The best part? You make it up. This type of dance leaves interpretation up to the dancer with suggested, but never imposed rhythmic stamps and taps on the floor in time with the kitchen party style music. A more open and casual type of dance, this sounds like a great way to let loose and practice those new skills learned from the workshops.
